Q. Why does Lakewood have a “No Homework” policy.

1. There is not a policy at Lakewood that dictates “No Homework”. There are a few reasons why you do not see the type of homework come home that you used to receive. The number one reason is that educational research, published in 2006, clearly shows that traditional homework does not have an impact on student learning in the elementary years. It does show, however, that the best time for learning is when the teacher is able to provide scaffolding and feedback to support the practice. To allow for this supported practice we have allotted 70 minute core class periods 5 days a week.

Q. How will Standards Based Grading impact my child’s placement in high school?

1. Standards based grading will not have any affect on your child’s opportunities at the high school level. In the spring we provide the high school with district assessment scores for each 8th grade student and the teacher’s provide feedback at a transition meeting; grades are not transferred to the high school for consideration. The exception to this is for students in an algebra or geometry class that receives high school credit.

Q. What is available for children who excel intellectually, creatively, artistically or in leadership?

• Most importantly, classroom activities based on student data to grow to the next level of learning based on specific progressions
